Monaco, 23th May – Raffaele Marciello’s Monaco weekend ended with a podium finish, in the third round of the GP2 Series. The Ferrari Driver Academy youngster was runner-up in the second race of the Monegasque weekend, to finish on the podium for the first time this season.
Having set the fastest time in his qualifying group, Raffaele kept the lead for the opening 7 laps. But the choice to start on the Supersoft tyre turned out not to be the best, not helped by the fact the Virtual Safety Car came into operation twice. Marciello finished eighth, which, with the reversed grid, meant he started Race 2 from pole. After the start, he found himself second in the braking area for Ste Devote and from then on, the top three places remained unchanged throughout the entire 30 laps.
“At the start of Race 1, I quickly moved into the lead, starting from second on the grid,” commented Marciello. “While in Race 2, it was the exact opposite. The left side of the track is right on the racing line and the surface is always a bit cleaner, which ensures you have better traction. Apart from that, which affected my second race of the weekend, I am not pleased with my total points haul that we take home from here. After a great qualifying, I could have expected better, but in Race 1, the strategy didn’t help and in the second one, after the start, I wasn’t able to try for an overtaking move. Getting my first podium of the season is some small consolation, but there is still work to be done to achieve the targets we set ourselves at the start of the year.”
