Spielberg, 20 June – Antonio Fuoco finished a great second in today’s GP3 race at Austria’s Red Bull Ring circuit. Having started eighth on the grid, after a period run under Virtual Safety Car conditions which froze the positions, the Ferrari Driver Academy student began a climb up the order that took him to the podium in only his second ever event in the category.
“When the lights went out, I got away well,” commented Fuoco at the end of the race. “But I dropped two places at the restart after the Virtual Safety Car. I knew the key to this race would be tyre management and in fact, in the first half, I tried not to push the pace too much. It was a tactic that paid off, because between laps 15 and 17, I managed to make up a many places, passing a lot of guys who were struggling with tyre degradation.”
Fuoco’s charge led him all the way up behind Luca Ghiotto, who won the race, thus making it an Italian one-two. In the second race of the Austrian weekend, which takes place tomorrow, Fuoco will start from seventh on the grid.
