Autodromo Nazionale Monza, Monza
The track was built in the year 1922, bearing the official name of Autodromo Nazionale, in the Royal Garden in Monza. It is one of the legendary circuits in motorsport and home of the Italian GP in the Formula One Championship, which has been held since 1950. Only once, in 1980, the Italian GP was held on the track in Imola. At the Monza circuit it’s history all over the place, with the steep turns, testimonials of a glorious past, made even more exciting by one more thing, a special title, worn by the track: “Temple of Speed”. On no other track in the Championship the Formula One cars drive 75% with a fully open throttle, reaching such elevated speeds. The long straights, interrupted by chicanes (gradually introduced over the years to counteract the cars’ improving performance) take the single-seaters up to speeds of over 320 km/h in four different points on the track, with a top speed of 340 km/h on the main straight. These characteristics demand a low aerodynamic load, to minimise drag. Aerodynamics is especially studied for this race. At the same time a good mechanical grip is fundamental for not losing any time, while attacking the infamous kerbs at the chicanes.
Keep an eye on
Although every bend in Monza is a challenge for the drivers in their single-seaters, which aren’t easy to control due to the low load, the Lesmo corners are particularly delicate: it’s a questions of milliseconds coming out of the second Lesmo with 180 km/h losing the racing line and finding oneself in the run-off area. Attention at the first chicane, where on 15- metres the single-seaters decelerate from 340 to 80 km/h.
Did you know that
In its home race the Scuderia won 18 times and at every success the fans invade the track to celebrate their team right in front of the podium. Ferrari’s last victory in Monza was signed by Fernando Alonso in 2010, while the Ferrarista with the most wins here is Michael Schumacher: 5 victories at the Italian GP for the German driver. And then there were many unforgettable successful moments such as the one-two win on 11 September 1988: that year McLaren dominated the series, but Prost had to retire due to a mechanical problem and Senna was out after an accident with a lapped car. Berger and Alboreto crossed the line in first and second position. The spectators but also the team wer enthusiastic and moved by this win, less than a month after Enzo Ferrari’s death.
