British Grand Prix

Silverstone

Together with the Italian GP the race in England is the oldest on the calendar.
Since 1950, the year the Formula One Championship officially started, the British GP has been held ever since. The Silverstone track is a former military base and hosted the first Grand Prix in the history of Formula 1. With 46 editions held so far it is also the race, which is the home race of most of the teams in the Circus. Despite modifications made over the years, the track, in Northamptonshire and Buckinghamshire, is one of the fastest on the race calendar. For about 65% of a lap the cars drive with a completely open throttle, which allows them to reach an average speed of 215 km/h. In 2010 the Silverstone circuit received a layout know as “Arena”. In the following year a new, advanced pit-paddock complex was introduced, while the home straight is now between the Club and Abbey bends. The strong wind and the changing weather conditions are the other key factors drivers and teams have to enter into the equation.

Keep an eye on
The fast corners of the Maggots-Beckett-Chapel combinations are one of the biggest challenge for the drivers in the entire Championship. The average speed is about 250 km/h in this extremely fast section, with very quick changes of direction, where lateral acceleration puts the drivers under up to 4G. Therefore it’s more than essential to have a single-seater with an exceptional allround set up.

Did you know that
The race in Silverstone has a very special place in the history of Ferrari: it was exactly on this track that in 1951 José Froilán González conquered the first victory with Ferrari in a race of the Formula One World Championship. After 60 years Fernando Alonso celebrated the important anniversary for the Prancing Horse crossing the line first in the 2011 edition of the British GP, the 16th victory for the Scuderia at this race. No other team has more victories here in England. But there weren’t only happy moments: Michael Schumacher, who won three times with Ferrari in Silverstone, had an accident in the Stowe corner in 1999. He broke his leg and had to stop for the next six races, postponing his ambitions for the World Title until the next year.
