United States Grand Prix

Circuit of The Americas, Austin

After five years the Formula One Championship came back to the USA in 2012. For the occasion a completely new track had been created in Austin, Texas, planned by Hermann Tilke in collaboration with the US-American architecture firm HKS. The track is 5,515 metres long and driven counter-clockwise, with an altitude difference of over 40 metres. The Circuit of The Americas offers some of the most fascinating sections from other tracks on the race calendar: the section from corner no. 3 to 6 is inspired by the fast sequence of changes of direction of the Magotts/Becketts in Silverstone or the S-bends in Suzuka, taken by the single-seaters in fifth/sixth gear at over 210 km/h. The section from bend no. 12 to 15 reminds of the Motodrom Stadium at the Hockenheimring, while the bit between the corners no. 16 and 18 reproduces the challenge of the famous corner no. 8 – with different vertexes – at the Istanbul Park. And then there’s the over one-kilometre-long main straight, where the cars reach a top speed of 315 km/h

Keep an eye on
The first corner is the Circuit of The Americas’ business card: an interesting slope at the end of the home straight leading to this tight left-hand bend, taken in first gear at under 80 km/h. On the following fast gradient the drivers point their cars’ noses towards the sky.

Did you know that
Of the 52 editions of the US GP held in the States Ferrari won 12: the first victory was gained with Niki Lauda at Watkins Glen in 1975, the last in Indianapolis in 2006 with Michael Schumacher. At the first edition of the US Grand Prix in Austin in 2012, the Scuderia gained third place with Fernando Alonso and fourth with Felipe Massa: a great result after a difficult qualifying.
