On 17th September 2003, Scuderia Ferrari was testing on two fronts, at Jerez de la Frontera with Michael Schumacher and at Monza with Felipe Massa. There was nothing strange in those days about testing at the same time at two tracks thousands of kilometres from one another. Ten years ago, there was no limitation whatsoever on private testing and Ferrari was capable of exploiting this freedom better than its rivals, when it came to developing the car and fine tuning its relationship with the tyres, especially during the long period spent working with Bridgestone. In fact, the work undertaken by Schumacher that week at Jerez was focussed on tyres, as the track is very tough in this area, as the surface is very abrasive and temperatures at that time of year are very high. In Monza, where the F2003-GA had triumphed the previous Sunday, Massa was working mainly on the development of technical updates aimed at the USA Grand Prix, which would take place the following week at Indianapolis.
