Pietro Mennea

Good bye, Pietro!

Maranello, 21 March 2013 – The first day of spring started with sad news from the world of Italian sport. Pietro Mennea, the “Flash from the South” passed away after after an incurable illness at the age of 60. For many years Mennea was a Sisport FIAT athlete and thanks to his talent and his determination he set an example in the world of athletics. He won Olympic Gold over 200 metres in Moscow in 1980, his specialty event, where he held the World Record for 17 years. But he won many more medals in his long and prosperous career. He participated five times in the Olympic Games, from Munich 1972 to Seoul in 1988. Tomorrow he would have celebrated the 30th anniversary of a record (14”8) over the unusual distance of 150 metres: a sign of his deep impact in the history of his sport.
Who loves competition like we do has to be condolatory. In thought we are with his wife Manuela and his close friends. We lost a man, who held the Italian flag high all over the world, he was a reason to be proud to be Italian.
