With the Florida Winter Series behind him, Raffaele Marciello has now embarked on the GP2 championship. The Ferrari Driver Academy student, who makes his debut in the series one step down from Formula 1, was on track for the first of two three day pre-season tests at the Abu Dhabi circuit. Marciello was working with his new team, Racing Engineering and did 159 laps of the Yas Marina track.
Raffaele completed all the scheduled programme, setting a quickest time of 1.50.261 on the first day. With the test over, competitors now move to the Sakhir circuit in Bahrain for the second test from 19 to 21 March, which hosts the first race of the GP2 series from 4 to 6 April, on the same card as the third round of the Formula 1 World Championship.
“I am very pleased with what we did in this test, particularly the times over the long runs, which showed we were very competitive in all track conditions. I also did a lot of practice starts and pit stops, two very important aspects for a rookie and overall, I managed a good number of laps, improving my feeling with the car and the Pirelli tyres. We had no technical problems and that meant we were able to get everything done.”
Luca Baldisserri, Head of the FDA
“The programme completed by Marciello and his engineers provided data that will be very useful in preparing for the demanding season ahead. One of the main aims of this test was to get used to the new Pirelli tyres, in race and qualifying trim. The overall outcome was very positive on the long runs, with great results, while over a single lap it’s not quite there yet. In the coming test in Bahrain, the programme will focus on qualifying simulation with the aim of getting the overall performance of the car sorted for the first race of the season.”
