Born on 25 April 1981 in Sao Paulo in Brazil, not far away from the Interlagos circuit, at the age of nine Felipe Massa was already behind a wheel. In the year 1990 he came in fourth in the Sao Paulo Micro-Kart Championship. In 1991 he was sixth and the following year he gained a place on the podium with a third place. After his successes in kart racing he participated in the Formula Chevrolet concluding the Brazilian Championship on fifth place, winning the title one year later, in 1999. This was his first victory in a Championship.
Felipe’s successes proceeded when he took part and won the Italian Formula Renault Championship in the year 2000. In the following year he won the European F3000 Championship. In 2001 he signed a contract with Ferrari and took part in what was his first test behind the wheel of a Formula 1 single-seater, with Sauber, at the Mugello circuit. In the year 2002 Felipe had his debut in the world of Formula 1 at the Australian GP with Sauber-Petronas. At the end of the season he had gained four points and started his work as Ferrari test-driver, his full-time occupation in the following season, contributing to the Scuderia’s triumph in both Championships in the year 2003.
In the following season he was back at Sauber-Petronas, where he had signed a two-year contract. At the end of 2005 he finally had the opportunity to race for the Scuderia Ferrari as of 2006. In his first year as an official driver of the team from Maranello he won the race in Turkey, his home-race in Brazil and gained the third place in the Drivers’ Standings. In the year 2007 Felipe fought for the title until a couple of races before the end of the season: his three wins during the year helped his teammate gaining the Drivers’ Title and the team winning the Constructors’ Title. In the year 2008 he gained twice as many Grands Prix as the year before and Felipe ended the season on the second place in the standings, just one point behind Hamilton, while contributing to the team’s victory in the Constructors’ Championship.
The year 2009 was a very special year for the Brazilian driver. Just like the whole team he suffered from the F60′s lack of performance, compared to the main competitors, but when the situation seemed to improve, he had an incredible accident during the qualifying for the Hungarian GP, followed by dramatic moments for his family, his team and the fans. Felipe completely recovered, but couldn’t participate in the last seven races of this season: therefore the season ended for him with just a third place at the German GP. Although 2009 ended in the best possible way: he was back behind the wheel of a Formula 1 single-seater, demonstrating his full recovery, and his son, bearing his name, was born.
In 2010, Massa finished sixth in the Drivers’ Championship, taking five podium finishes. It was his sixth season with Scuderia Ferrari. 2011 was his sixth season with Scuderia Ferrari and again he finished sixth.
