Born on 24 February 1971 in Barcelona, Spain, Pedro Martinez de la Rosa’s career spans across two decades, making him one of the most experienced drivers in F1. His passion for off-road radio- controlled cars led him in 1988 to his first local karting championship in Spain and one year later to is debut with single-seater cars.
In 1989, he raced and won in the Spanish Formula Fiat Uno Championship with 2 wins and 3 podiums and he repeated his success in 1990 winning the title in the Spanish Formula Ford 1600 Championship with 8 wins and 1 podium.
The following year Pedro joined the Spanish Formula Renault Championship, ending his season 4th overall with 3 podium finishes. In 1992 he moved on to the European Formula Renault Series and British Formula Renault Championship where he was crowned Champion of both.
Following two years in the British Formula 3 Championship in 1993 and 1994, Pedro began racing in the All-Japan Formula 3 Championship which he won thanks to 8 wins and one second place.
In the following two years, Pedro continued to gain experience in Japan while competing in the Formula Nippon Championship and the All-Japan GT Championship, both of which he won in 1997. In 1998 Pedro made his debut in F1 as Reserve and Test Driver for Jordan Grand Prix, clocking up over 4.500 kms. of testing before switching, a year later, to Team Arrows Grand Prix where he stayed in 1999 and 2000.
Subsequently, after a two year stint at Jaguar Racing, in 2003 Pedro joined Team McLaren where he stayed until 2011, with the exception of one year, 2010, in which he raced with the Sauber F1 Team and splitting his duties as a Pirelli development driver.
During his period at McLaren, Pedro alternated his role between seasons as Test Driver and Official Driver and his best result was a 2 nd place in 2006 in the Hungarian GP, his first podium finish in F1. In 2012, Pedro was nominated President of the Grand Prix Drivers Association and he raced for HRT, entering all 20 races for the Spanish outfit. Since 2013 De la Rosa has been Scuderia Ferrari test driver.
