Singapore Grand Prix - Pole for Charles, Seb third

21 Sep 2019

Charles Leclerc took his fifth Formula 1 career pole, all of them obtained this season. The Monegasque driver will start from the number one slot when the race gets underway tomorrow at 20.10 local (14.10 CET) after the lights go out above the starting grid for the Singapore Grand Prix. Sebastian Vettel starts third having missed out on a front row slot by just 29 thousandths of a second. It’s something of an unexpected result for Scuderia Ferrari given the characteristics of this track.

Q3. Seb and Charles both got through to the final part of qualifying with no problems and took to the track on new Softs for the top ten shoot-out. The German got a really good first lap in 1’36”437, which was the target for the rest to aim for, even though he “kissed” the wall with left rear wheel. Both SF90s went back out in the final minutes and while Sebastian was unable to improve, Charles produced a perfect lap which resulted in an unbeatable 1’36”217, although Lewis Hamilton did manage to beat Vettel’s time by a whisker.

Statistics. Charles has now been on pole more often than any driver this season, while it was Scuderia Ferrari’s sixth pole of 2019 and their 225th overall. Tomorrow’s 61 laps produce a race distance of 308.706 km, however very often here, the appearance of the Safety Car means the race ends before full distance once it hits the maximum two hour time limit.
