14 Jul 1951
On the 14th July 1951, one of the cornerstones of Ferrari’s great history was put down. In the British Grand Prix, Argentina’s Jose Froilan Gonzalez gave Ferrari its first win in Formula 1.
At Silverstone, the Argentinian took pole in 1.43.4, beating the Alfa Romeos of Juan Manuel Fangio and world champion Giuseppe Farina by one second and one and a half seconds respectively. At the start, Felice Bonetto took his Maserati into the lead, but soon after Gonzalez went ahead.
Then began an extremely lively duel with Fangio, the two men changing places several times. Shortly after half distance, both drivers pitted to refuel and Gonzales, respecting the hierarchy, offered his car to Alberto Ascari, who had had to retire. Ascari refrained from stopping the Argentinian’s charge and indicated he should continue. Elated at being able to continue, after the stop, Gonzalez dispensed with Fangio to give the Maranello marque its first win. The day was made complete when Villoresi came home third.
